I am Jesus Walking on the Water

I’ve been dreaming a lot during this pandemic. In a dream the other night, my partner and I attend a church service which engages neither of us. I say to him,

“This kind of religion has to go. God as an external being - usually a ‘He’ – with whom we transact to get what we want, to get our personal salvation. But there’s no transformation. We need to move beyond our own little self to know we are Life Itself. Jesus is then everything and everyone we encounter. That’s resurrection.”

The dream continue as we leave the service together and walk outside. My partner says: “So Jesus is this butterfly?”

“Yes!”

“And this flower?”

“Yes!”

“And the evolutionary process itself?”

“Absolutely!”

The following poem is based on a meditation I had after my dream:

Midst turmoil and upheaval,

Anxiety fogs the mind

with its bleak midwinter.

A lostness of heart

casts us adrift not knowing

where to anchor our souls.

Mesmerized by seething storms,

We begin to sink.

Pinpricks of light pierce

the canopy of midnight,

star rays finally reaching us

beyond our frames of time and space.

In that Light our eyes notice

a figure walking toward us on the water.

Whoever or Whatever it is,

We recognize our True Self coming toward us.

We know, midst the raging seas,

An inner buoyancy,

An innate wholeness

when all around us disintegrates.

Suddenly it dawns,

A miracle of recognition:

I am Jesus walking on the troubled water.

I am the Sun illuminating God everywhere.

Trouble and turbulence become the seen rather than the seer.

Love dethrones fear

and meets what is

from deep Knowing of who I am.

I am not me, myself, and I.

I am One Shared Life, One Shared Pain. One Shared Happiness.

What comes next is unknown.

How to live this moment is known clearly:

As Jesus walking on the troubled water.

As the Sun illuminating God everywhere.
